Narrative

Hector was the son of Alexander McDougall and Nancy McLean.
No baptismal record was found for Hector, but he signed a land agreement with other members of his family in 1863.

Hector's first wife was Elizabeth P. Hardy, daughter of Solomon Hardy of Lot 3. I was unable to find their marriage record - this information came from her obituary, gravestone and their childrens' marriage records. There seem to be incomplete records for his children from his first marriage. Elizabeth Hardy McDougald's obituary said they had 8 children at the time of her death, and this was repeated by Rev. Robert Dyer in his diary. The 1861 census also indicates that there are a couple of missing children.

One son was named after Elizabeth's father, Solomon Hardy, and another son was Alexander. Another possible son would be William Douglas McDougall, born about 1860/61 in Alberton PEI, and who died in New Brunswick.

Solomon Hardy and Hector McDougall from Huntley and Kildare Rivers, Lot 3 contributed to the Patriotic Fund in 1855. There was also a Hector McDougall on the subscription list for the Alberton Presbyterian Church around 1855-67, with the Kildare subscribers.

However, in the 1861 census, the only Hector McDougall in Lot 3 was single, and a Roman Catholic, which would not be him. He was more likely the Hector McDoughal in Lot 8 with a household of 7: 2 boys under 5 and 1 between 6-15; 2 girls between 6-15; one married couple - all born on the Island and all Presbyterian.

Hector was 60, a farmer, and married to his second wife Jane (Jane McClenaghan Mountain) in the 1881 census: Hector McDougald age 60, Jane McDougald 40, Almond McDougald 20 [Solomon] ; Gordon McDougald 5, George McDougald 3; and Jane's three children from her first marriage to James Mountain - Mary Jane Mountain 17; Fulton Mountain 14 and Proctor Mountain, age 12. Son Charles Henry was living in the household of Thomas & Ann (Hardy) Sage in Lot 4. Daughter Martha was likely the Martha McDougald age 17 living in the household of Eleanor/Ellen (McDougall) and Daniel Gillis of Lot 3 - another daughter of Hector's.

Jane died before 1886, when Hector married for the third time: "At the manse in Montrose September 29 by Rev. George Fisher, Hector McDougald of Alma, Lot 3 to Mrs. Ann Sage of Mills River." (Summerside Journal October 21 1886 page 3 col 3)

In 1891, Hector and Ann were living in Lot 4:
Hecter Mcdougall 75
Annie Mcdougall 56 (formerly Ann Sage, nee Hardy)
Soloman Mcdougall 25 - two sons from first marriage
Henery Mcdougall 23
Gordon Mcdougall 17 - two sons from second marriage
George Mcdougall 14

On this record, Hector said his father had been born in Scotland and his mother on Prince Edward Island.

There was an entry for Hector McDougall who died of old age in 1902 in Elmsdale United Church records, which fits with him not being in the 1911 census. Although one of his sons moved to New Hampshire, I don't think the Hector McDougall who died in NH in 1903 was him.
