Narrative

Flora McLean was born in PEI, the daughter of Hugh McLean and Peggy McKendrick. She married John Maynard in 1853. In an interview, Jennie Maynard said her grandmother Flora McLean was a lovely lady, born on PEI.

Another grand-daughter, Josephine Maynard Beall, wrote in her book Sugared Doughnuts "She had twelve children; my father was the last of the twelve and the seventh son. So, my father being their baby, naturally my Maynard grandparents were quite on in years when I was born. How well I remember Grandmother Maynard sitting in a low rocking chair in the big happy kitchen with our baby, Herman Edmund on her knee and the rest of us sitting on a hooked rug around her chair. How we children must have loved her, because we never played house without borrowing a shawl of Mama's and then arguing over who would play the grandmother."

The Guardian newspaper often noted that Flora's children were visiting her. for instance, from the Guardian August 14, 1915:
Among the passengers crossing on the Empress Monday was Mrs. Catherine White and Mr. Maynard N. White of Brockton Mass, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Maynard of Dorchester, Mass. They will spend their vacation with Mrs. Flora Maynard at the old homestead at Port Hill...Mrs. Flora Maynard makes her home with her son, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Maynard on the old homestead at the advanced age of 86 years. Mrs. Maynard is very active and has never been sick a day in her life and is the proud mother of seven sons and four daughters, all living. Four are settled around Boston and one son moved to Manitoba.

Mrs Maynard dies - Mrs. Flora Maynard a deeply respected lady, passed away last Saturday morning at the ripe age of 93 years at the residence of her son, Charles A. Maynard, of Low Point, Port Hill. There are left to mourn five sons and five daughters, namely Messrs. Edward of Northam, Charles on the old homestead with whom the deceased lived, Henry and Herman in Boston. Arthur in the Canadian West. Mrs. Edmund Birch, Lot 14; Mrs. Arthas [Artemis] McArthur of Arlington; Mrs. Newton White of Boston. Mrs. Peter Carroll of Brockton, Mass., and Mrs. M. L. F. McKenzie of Summerside. The funeral is taking place this (Tuesday) afternoon at Port Hill, Rev. Mr. Travers officiating. (Charlottetown Guardian - 23 March 1922)

The obituary in the Summerside Journal added "Deceased was a daughter of the late Hugh McLean, of Port Hill. Mrs. Flora Maynard, of Port Hill; Mrs. Sarah Turner, Tyne Valley, and Mrs. Margaret Stevenson, Moulis River, N.B., are sisters."
