Notes

Note

Don or Dan was the son of Donald McLean and Sarah Ellis. He married Sarah Maud Raynor.

This is probably him, Dan McLean (McLane) age 26, married to Maud, on the same page of the 1891 census as his parents and brothers.

From a newspaper clipping:

A wave of sorrow spread over the village of Tyne Valley and the surrounding community when on Monday morning, Feb. 17th,1941 it was learned that Mr. Dan MacLean had, during the closing hours of the Sabbath, been called to the Heavenly Home. Although he had not been in the best of health for the past few years his condition was not considered serious until within a few days previous to his death. All that medical skill and tender nursing could do failed to restore him and the spirit of one who was highly esteemed and loved by young and old passed to the Great Beyond.

The deceased was born in Tyne Valley July 10th, 1864. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Donald MacLean and resided on the old homestead. He was one of a family of 13 of which the following survive, viz: Mr. James E. MacLean, Northam; Mrs. Henry Ritchie, Tyne Valley; Mrs. Henry Williams, Elmsdale; Mrs. Thomas Adams, Lot 14.

His departure has left not only a vacancy in the home but in the community as well.

Always thinking of the welfare of others, he was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those who needed assistance. His home was a place where both young and old loved to congregate for by his kind and friendly disposition he eadeared himself to all with whom he came in contact, even during his hours of sickness he was never known in murmur or complaint, always greeting those who entered his room with a smile.

He was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, having filled the office of Elder for over 20 years. As long as health permitted he was ever present at its services, always taking a deep interest in all that pertained in his Master's Kingdom.

The funeral service, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, was very largely attended despite the inclemency of the weather relatives and friends attending from different parts of the province. A short service was conducted at the home by Rev. Herbert Buntain, minister of the congregation, after which the funeral cortege wended its way to the Presbyterian Church where the service was continued. The following favorite hymns of the deceased were sung during the service: "The Lord's My Shepherd," "Forever With The Lord," "Jerusalem My Happy Home." At the conclusion of the service the remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery beside those of his parents. The following acted as pallbearers : Messers Edward McArthur, Laughlin McLean, Fred McAusland, Russ Rogers, Shrieve Millar, Robert Ramsay. The Elders from the different sections of the congregation were in attendance.

He leaves to mourn their loss his grief-stricken widow (formerly Maude Raynor), one son, Ivan, at home; two grandsons, Donald, teacher of Tyne Valley; Ralph, teacher at Prince St. School, Charlottetown, also two great-granddaughters.

The high esteem in which the deceased was held was evidenced by the many messages of sympathy received not only from friends in this province but from the neighbouring provinces. Many beautiful floral tributes were also received.

An obituary in the Summerside Journal added "For many years he held the agency for Massey-Harris Farm Implements. He will long be remembered, however, for his prominent part in the horse industry, fostering good breeding, and setting the example for honesty in buying and selling. Of a frank and open nature, his friends will not soon forget his warm smile and cheery greeting or the hearty welcome received at his hand."
MacLean Daniel Summerside Journal 18 February 1941, page 3, col. 1 Daniel MacLean, Farmer and Horseman of Tyne Valley, Dies Was Well Known in P.E.I.

...on Sunday of Dan Mclean of Tyne Valley, prominent farmer and horseman of that place. Although ailing for some time, his passing came somewhat of a shock to his near friends and neighbor... The late Mr. MacLean was born at Tyne Valley 77 years ago, and lived there most of his life. For many years he held the agency for Massey-Harris Farm Implements and machines. He will long be remembered however for his prominent part in the horse industry, fostering good breeding and setting the example for honesty in buying and selling. Of a frank and open nature his friends will not soon forget his war smile and cheery greeting. Charlottetown Guardian Tuesday February 18, 1941 page 7

Guardian 1941: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Williams spent a few days in Tyne Valley and Northam last week. While there they attended the funeral of Mrs. Willlams' brother, Mr. Daniel MacLean, a highly respected citizen and prominent farmer of Tyne Val- ley.
