Narrative
Donald MacLean was born on Nov 20, 1827 in Tyne Valley, Lot 13, Prince Edward Island, the fifth child of Scottish imigrant Hugh McLean and his Prince Edward Island born wife, Peggy McKendrick. Donald married Sarah Ellis, daughter of shipbuilder William Ellis of Bideford on Sep 14, 1848 in Port Hill, Prince Edward Island.
On the baptismal record for their eldest daughter Margaret Emily, born in 1849 in Lot 12, Donald gave his occupation a ship's carpenter. According to notes made by Julia McLean, the actual date he settled the farm on the Northam Road is unknown but there is a land transaction dated 1856. In the 1861 census, the family was in Lot 13, and Donald was a farmer. He was 7 years into his lease. After the land question was settled, Donald and Sarah purchased their 82-acre farm from the PEI government in 1877. They raised a family of thirteen children.
In the 1861 census, there were 3 boys under 5, and one boy and three girls between 6-15 as well as a married couple, all Presbyterians. Emily and Caroline married in the early 1870s.

Some land and the new house was left to Sarah, and the land to son Dan. Son Dan is to pay $100 to each of his seven sisters: Emily McArthur; Rachael Horn; Mary Ann McNevin; Janey Horn and his three unmarried sisters, Margaret, Mina and Flora, and to Donald and Sarah's granddaughter Mabel $50.00.
