PEI Native Dies From Rifle Wound

A victim of an accidental shooting while cleaning his rifle for a hunting trip, Herbert McArthur, 48, a special police officer here for many years and for 19 years caretaker of the Richard Wheatland estate on Hill Street was found dead in the kitchen of the caretaker's house early on the morning of November 8. The discovery was made by Harry Bunbridge, Danvers garage proprietor, who was to have accompanied him on the hunting trip. According to police, the body was stretched out on the floor with a gaping hole through the heart. No one else was in the house at the time. the verdict of Dr. Elmer S. Bagnall of Groveland, medical examiner, was accidental death by firearms. He said Mr. McArthur probably died between 6 and 8:30 that night. The Wheatlands are not living there at present and as the estate is in a lonely section nobody had occasion to visit the place until Burbridge arrived that morning.
Mrs. Ethel G. McArthur, the widow, the only immediate survivor, was overcome when told of the accident. She was staying with her mother at a house in Newburyport turnpike in Rowley, where relatives operate a roadside filling station and roadside stand.
McArthur, a native of Prince Edward Island, was a devotee of hunting and was considered an authority on hunting dogs and guns, Police Chief Ormond C. Taylor made the preliminary investigation and was later assisted by Sergt. Noonan and Officer W_____ of the State Police. Dr. Byron Sanborn of Topsfield and Dr. Arthur W. O'Neill went to the house before the medical examiner arrived. (Salem Exchange, Mass.)

Herbert McArthur was single when he filled out a form for WW1, giving his mother, Mrs. Emily McArthur as his contact. He married Ethel G. Warren later in 1918. They had no children.
