In 1861 they were living in Lot 7 with one son and an older woman, and in 1881 were residents of Charlottetown with the following children: William (age 22) and his wife Annie (age 20); John Nelson (age 18), Elizabeth (age 16), Robert (age 14), Marsha (age 9), Lucinda (age 7), Mary Ann (age 5), Margaret (age 3), and Frederick (infant). All were b. PEI. Duncan was a ship's carpenter, two of his sons were fishermen.

The family moved to Massachusetts. In 1884, Joanna was on a passenger list with younger children Lizzie (17), Lucinda (10), Minnie (7), Maggie (6) and Fred (3). There was no daughter Marsha. Duncan must have gone ahead with the older boys - William and John Nelson were found in Massachusetts records.
