Hannah's baptismal record in Richmond Church of England records gives her date of birth as 3 April 1821, and her parents names as William Ellis and Ann Campbell. William and Ann also named a daughter Ann, born in 1825, who married Robert Ramsay. Census data supports that Hannah was the eldest daughter of William and Ann/Nancy.

According to the History of the Ellis family, Hannah married Alexander McDougall. He died, leaving her with 10 children. She married Martin Ladner in 1875.

In 1891, Hannah and her second husband were in Cape Breton with her son James Ellis McDougall and grand-daughter Jane E McDougall. Jane could have been the daughter of any one of her children.

Hannah E. Ellis Ladner, daughter of William Ellis and Nancy Cameron died on 6 May 1898 in Massachusetts at the age of 80.
